The publication of this special edition of Oliver Twist was suggested by a very successful production of a dramatic version of the story recently made by The Liebler Company. Taking a(2vantage of the great interest in Dickens which culminated at the time of the celebration of the Dickens Centenary, this managerial concern selected Oliver Twist as the most dramatic of all the plays that have been made from Dickens sbooks, assembled a cast of extraordinary strength for its interpretation, and planned to make its production a leading feature of the American observance of the one-hundredth anniversary of the great novelists birth. The work of the celebrated players engaged to portray the priiicipal characters made the production, as had been expected, one of the most notable dramatic events of the past few years, but few had anticipated the great popular appeal of the play itseK, which contributed greatly to the success of the undertaking. The version of the play used was that by J. Comyns Carr, the distinguished English critic and dramatist, a man conversant with the demands of the modern theatre; and so skillfully did he arrange the action and the dialogue that, while remaining faithful to his original in every point of importance, he succeeded in setting forth the great strength of the story in such a manner as to grip the sophisticated audiences of to-day. Nat C.
